Bwindi Impenetrable National Park protects one of Africa’s most ancient highland forests. It has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of its rich biodiversity, which includes a great many plants and animals whose range is restricted to the Albertine Rift Valley. The best known of these is of course the mountain gorilla, but other local specialties include the handsome L’Hoest’s monkey, spectacular Rwenzori three-horned chameleon and eagerly sought African green broadbill.

Day 2 to 4 Volcanoes National Park

If the majestic Virunga peaks of Volcanoes National Park look familiar as you approach them, that's because they were once home to primatologist Dian Fossey, and the movie 'Gorillas in the Mist' was shot on location there. Mountain gorillas remain the park's most keenly sought inhabitants, but it also forms an important stronghold for the endangered golden monkey and for 16 bird species native to the Albertine Rift Valley. Guided day hikes onto the richly biodiverse volcanic slopes lead through towering bamboo thickets, dense tropical jungle and otherworldly high-altitude moorland.

We spend the morning tracking a troop of the Endangered golden monkey through bamboo-covered Virunga slopes protected within Volcanoes National Park.

Situated just 10 minutes’ drive from the park headquarters at Kinigi, this ecolodge is a popular and convenient place for gorilla tracking and other activities in Volcanoes National Park. An imposing thatched restaurant serves delicious meals made with fresh ingredients sourced from the local community. Accommodation is in large cottages with their own lounge and terrace, a modern bathroom, and a fireplace to take the edge off those chilly highland evenings.

Day 7 Murchison Falls National Park

The main reason people visit Murchison Falls National Park is to see the spectacular namesake waterfall formed by the Nile as it explodes through a narrow cleft in the Rift Valley Escarpment. But Uganda’s largest national park is also a highly rewarding safari destination, whether you're hoping for dramatic encounters with the Big Five (all but one of which, rhino, is present) or more interested in spotting local specialties such as the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, the spindly-limbed patas monkey, or the dashingly colorful red-throated bee-eater and white-crested turaco.

Murchison River Lodge

Fall asleep to the sound of grunting hippos and awake to a chorus of birdsong at Murchison River Lodge, which overlooks a wide stretch of the Nile as it flows downriver from Murchison Falls to Lake Albert. The accommodation and food at this well-managed bush lodge both draw regular praise, but our favorite thing about it is the wild riverside setting, which can be enjoyed from the swimming pool or shady terrace restaurant.

Day 8 Entebbe

Entebbe is the main air gateway to Uganda. It stands on the lush northern shore of Lake Victoria – the world's second-largest freshwater body – only an hour’s drive south of the capital Kampala. It's a very relaxed and low-rise city, offering a good choice of lakeshore restaurants, abundant greenery, and some of the best urban bird watching anywhere in Africa.
